Pumping Statinon at the Former Mikawashima Sewage Disposal Plant
Pumping Statinon at the Former Mikawashima Sewage Disposal Plant that started operation in 1922 is the birthplace of modern sewerage system in Japan. The group of monuments (including pump pit, screen chamber, etc.) was acknowledged as the representative literary remains of the plant with high historical value, and were designated as national important cultural property (buildings) on December 4, 2007 for the first time in the field of sewerage system. Especially, the pump pit structure, with the then popular art nouveau pattern external appearance with red brick and white horizontal line, excels in design.
The monuments are open to public during spring and autumn events, gathering a large number of visitors.
