  4 Utilization of Reclaimed Water - Utilization of Reclaimed Water  
  In addition to arousing water-saving consciousness and development and promoting the use of water-saving equipments, Tokyo Metropolitan Government recommends recycling use of water for miscellaneous use to the buildings above a certain size with a view to making a desirable environment.
Further, because of the abundance and stable quality of the treated wastewater (reclaimed water), its effective utilization is highly expected as an important water resource of Tokyo. The Bureau of Sewerage is promoting a project to widen the reuse of treated (reclaimed) wastewater, with the areas for supplying reclaimed water being as follows:

1. Nishi Shinjuku and Nakano Sakaue Area 2. Tokyo Waterfront City area
3. Shinagawa Station east entrance area 4. Osaki area
5. Shiodome area 6. Nagatacho and Kasumigaseki area
7. Yashio and Higashi Shinagawa area (scheduled)

  4 Utilization of Reclaimed Water - Restoration of Waterways (Environmental Water)  
   

  Restoration of three Rivers in the Jonan area (Shibuya and Furukawa River, Meguro River and Nomikawa River)  
  The reclaimed water after advanced treatment in Ochiai Water Reclamation Center is fed into the three streams-Shibuya and Furukawa River, Meguro River and Nomikawa River-where river flow decresed and stream environment deteriorated, contributing to the increase of water volume and recuperation of the affluent water environment.  
 
Shibuya and Furukawa River Meguro River

The reclaimed water is used for such a place. (It is subjected to Revese Osmosis membrane filtration.)
Shibuya River was used as a source of water supply to the fields when Shibuya-ward was a rural village, while Furu River played an important role in the development of modern industrialization.

Meguro River
Meguro River inflicted heavy damages to the basin due to the floods in Eolo eras. However, in Meiji era, industrialization of the coastal area started, contributing largely to the modern industrial development.
Design water volume: Max. 30,200m3/day

Nomikawa River
In the past Nomikawa River was clean enough to be used as a river for drinking water. In the downstream, laver cultivation prospered until 1935, with the highest turnout record in Japan.

  Restoration of Waterways in Tama Area iNobidome Waterway, Tamagawa and Senkawa Channelsj  
  The treated wastewater from the Water Reclamation Center at the upstream of Tama River is treated by sand filteration and further by ozonation before being fed into Nibidome Waterway, which had stagnated water flow over a long time, and into Tamagawa and Senkawa Channels to restore streams. The streams have now bobbling flow, provide plentitude and comfort to people, and are used as a place of recreation and relaxation for the Tokyo residents.

Senkawa Channel
Nobidome Waterway, built by Matsudaira Nobutsune (Governor of Izu) in Edo era, has been used as a source of daily-life water and irrigation water for more than 300 years, and was designated as history and environment preservation area of Tokyo in December 1974.
Design water volume: Max. 15,000m3/day
Supply started: August 1984
Tamagawa Channel
Tamagawa Channel is a water channel made by the Tamagawa brothers about 350 years ago (in 1654) to supply drinking water to the Edo City. Later, the channel was branched to various places in Musashino Daichi (Plateau) as a source of drinking water, irrigation water and also as a power source for waterwheels. The channel was designated as history and environment preservation area of Tokyo in March 1999, and as a historic place in August 2003 based on the Law for Protection of Cultural Properties.
Design water volume: 13,200m3/day
Supply started: August 1986
Senkawa Channel
The Senkawa Channel was branched from the Tamagawa Channel about 310 years ago (in 1696) to supply water mainly to Koishikawa Goten and Yushima Seidou. Later, it was divided into several sub-branches along the Channel to be used as the source of irrigation water and power source for water wheels.

  4 Utilization of Reclaimed Water - Water for Watering Plants at Drought and Water for Fire Fighting  
  The reclaimed water is used for watering plants and trees in dry season, and can also be used for disaster prevention, thus contributing to the safety of the city.  
 
Large-size hydrant (Jonan 3 Rivers)
At three points on the water transmission route to Jonan 3 Rivers, the reclaimed water used as environmental water can also be used at the time of disaster as water for fire fighting.
