| Shibaura Water Reclamation Center |
 |
| |
Starting operation in 1931, Shibaura Water Reclamation Center is the third oldest
water reclamation center in Tokyo. The original surroundings of dock warehouses
have long since been replaced with rows of office buildings as the area has been
absorbed into the city. The treatment area covers the most of Chiyoda, Chuo,
Minato, Shinjuku and Shibuya wards and a some parts of Shinagawa, Bunkyo,
Meguro, Setagaya and Toshima wards, an area of 6,440 ha. This is equivalent to the
land area inside the JR Yamanote line.
The treated water is discharged to Tokyo Bay (canal). A part of the treated water is
cleaned through sand filtration and t h e n used inside the Center for cleaning facilities,
cooling machines, and flushing toilets. The water further cleaned through ozonization
is supplied to the neighboring buildings as water for flushing toilets.
The generated sludge is pumped through pressure pipelines to the Nambu Sludge Plant for
treatment. |

●Average quality of intake and discharge water
The quality of water discharged from the plant complies completely with the water quality standards of the Tokyo Metropolitan Environmental Security Ordinance and is sufficiently clean for the fish to live in. |

| *The higher values of BOD and COD indicate the higher levels of water contamination. BOD describes the amount of oxygen required by microorganisms to eat organic material in water, and COD describes the amount of oxygen required by oxidizer to decompose organic material in water. The quality levels of discharged water are specified in terms of BOD for rivers and COD for seas. Total nitrogen and total phosphorus are closely related to the generation of red tides. |

Sewerage System Components |
|
| |
The sewerage system is principally made up of 3 facilities.
Sewers, which collect and carry wastewater.
Pumping stations, where wastewater is pumped up so that the sewers do not get too deep.
Water reclamation centers, where wastewater is treated to be clean water.
Inspections, cleaning, and repairs are done daily in order to make sure each of these facilities works properly. |

The Role of Tokyo Sewerage Systems |
|
| |
Our sewerage system plays a vital role in ensuring a safe and pleasant living environment and in the makeup of a healthy water circulation system. In addition to cleaning water that is dirtied by use in the daily lives and activities of Tokyo residents and returning that water to the rivers and sea, the system also speedily removes rainwater from land surface of cities. |
|
| |
★Improvement of Living Environment through Sewage Treatment
Sewage discharged from homes and factories is treated to ensure a comfortable living environment. |
 |
|
|
| |
★Preventing Flooding through the Removal of Rainwater
The city is protected from flooding through the speedy removal of rainfall on land surface. |
 |
|
|
| |
★Water Quality of Public Water Bodies
Improvement in the quality of water is ensured by treating wastewater and releasing the cleaned water into rivers and the sea. |
 |
|
|
| |
★A New Role
The sewerage system has a new role, that of creating a healthy environment for the city. Specifically, it contributes to the environment by aiding in reducing the use of natural resources and the saving of energy by utilizing various resources in wastewater and facilities such as roofs of the Water Reclamation Center will be used for various purposes. |

Features of Shibaura Water Reclamation Center |
|
| |
| Reclaimed water utilization project contributing to recycling-oriented city |
The abundance and stable
quality of treated water
makes it possible to use it
as reclaimed wastewater.
The sand filtration of the
Shibaura Water Reclamation
Center removes minute
impurities from treated water
to remove minute impurities
and adds sodium hypochlorite
before using it in the
Center for cleaning and
cooling equipment and
flushing toilets.
Further, the reclaimed water is also supplied to the Shinagawa Station East Exit,
Osaki, Shiodome, Nagatacho-Kasumigaseki and East Shinagawa-Yashio areas
for flushing toilets.
The turbidity and odor of this water has been further reduced through biological
filtration, ozonization, ozone resistance micro filtration and ceramic membrane filtering. |

| High-rate Filtration System |
| This is a facility to remove the suspended
solids contained in the wastewater
through absorption to the filter
media having buoyancy. Needing
less space, the facility is capable of high
speed treatment. |

|
| |
| Wastewater Heat Utilization Project as a Contribution to Prevention of Global Warming |
| The treated wastewater from the Center is supplied to the building of Sony Corporation, located to the south of the Center for cooling the building air-conditioning equipment. This new heat utilization project started in October, 2006, contributing to an annual reduction of approximately 22 ton of carbon dioxide. |

| Hamakaze no Sato |
| "Hamakaze no Sato" (Home to Beach Wind), completed in 1994 as a commemoration of the fact that sewered population reached almost 100% in the Ward area, has bamboo groves, a pond, a cascade and others, and attracts people as a place of recreation and relaxation. |

|
| |
| Vegetable Garden inside the Site |
| The staff members grow sweet potatoes using no agrichemicals in the plant growing field on the south inside the site. At the time of harvest in November, kindergarten children are invited to dig the sweet potatoes. |

| Above-ground Park as a Spot of Recreation and Relaxation |
| In the above-ground space of the wastewater treatment facilities, there are parks, tennis courts and athletic parks of Minato-ward. |
